Submarine or Punjab Coloney Chowk has become one notorious place. The Karachi Walla was robbed off a Rs. 2000 phone not long time ago here. I was waiting for the signal to turn green when two armed people knocked on the window and asked for the mobile phone. I obliged.
Therefore I was little apprehensive turning inside Punjab Coloney to reach Gizri Mohammadan Stadium. You cant miss it. It is on one of the busiest roads in Karachi. Between Submarine chowk and the next one which leads to Sunset Boulevard. However it’s entrance is on the far end. The road is not lit well. Near the gate, on the wall, it says that drugs is a waste of time and health and One should join Karate instead. I walked past the gate. There was not any football match set up for the evening. There was a small tent set up for a wedding. The children were playing cricket in the light put up for the wedding. I moved past them into the enclosure where the K7 Academy is situated.
K7 Academy teaches Kyokushin Karate, Boxing and Kick Boxing. The hall is reasonably big to accommodate two to three dozen people. It’s painted a weird shade of red/pink. At the entrance is a table with desktop for administrative purpose. The back wall is full of certificates from various Karate and related associations across the globe. There are punching bags on one side of the hall and mat for the fights on the other. Few boys were doing push-ups in the middle. Few on the far end were having a practice fight. The place is full of Punching Bags, Target Pads, Gloves, Skipping ropes, climbing rope, Shin pads, head guards, Chest guard. Also there was lot of anger which was vented out here.
“What I am trying to do is unheard of for many. The new generation faces many distractions like shisha, cigarettes and drugs. I am trying to provide them an alternative.” explained the founder K7 Academy Mr. Jamil Chandio
“But this is not easy. I have been able to represent Pakistan as a sportsman and a trainer only due to the financial support of my family. The boys here can reach new heights but they need financial support from corporates.”
K7 Academy is arranging an event in Khadda Market on 6th of April. The Academy is seeking media coverage and sponsorship. Contribute if you can. It can make a difference. You can contact Mr. Chandio here.
