Karachi’s first Chinese Lantern Show is being held in Shaheed Benazeer Park in Clifton from 14th of August to 26th of August. The ticket is for Rs. 300 per person which is quite overpriced for a family event. Valet is available but there is ample parking space along the boundary of the park. While the fixtures are worthy of a visit, the scale of the entire festival could have been and should have been bigger especially considering the price.
Chinese lanterns are a symbol of Chinese culture worldwide. The lanterns that we see in Karachi and other parts of the world during festivals are quite elaborate, designed in the shape of dragons, falcons, fish and other real/fairy tale characters. However they were originally used as, well as source of light, covered with paper or silk to save the flame from wind.
There is a food court at the back which is as sad as food court in Park Towers. There are other activities for children like face painting and pedal boats which is equally forgetful. Therefore know that you are primarily paying for looking at lantern festival fixtures up close.
The organizers can benefit from better customer service. Denizens of Karachi deserve a better and bigger lantern festival.
Rs 300/- is indeed way too much. I was thinking about going there with my family but now having second thoughts. Perhaps a trip to an amusement park is more feasible.
